3 Alabama universities close DEI offices, shift staff
SUMMARY
Three Alabama universities have closed their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices to comply with a state law prohibiting events or programs based on race, sex, gender identity, ethnicity, national origin, or sexual orientation. The University of Alabama System campuses, including the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Huntsville, announced the closures by October 1st. Instead, they will open a Division of Opportunities, Connections, and Success to support educational access and achievement for all. UA President Stuart Bell emphasized their continued commitment to individual success, free speech, and academic freedom. This move follows similar actions in Republican-led states like Florida and Texas.
