Boeing workers overwhelmingly reject contract, prepare to strike
SUMMARY
Over 30,000 Boeing workers, represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, voted overwhelmingly to strike, rejecting a new labor contract with a 96% vote. The work stoppage, set to begin at midnight, will halt production of most of Boeing’s aircraft, including the 737 Max, and comes at a challenging time for the company, which is already struggling to boost output and recover its reputation. The rejected contract offered 25% wage increases and enhanced benefits, but union members had sought raises of approximately 40% to address rising living costs. IAM District 751 President Jon Holden accused Boeing of unfair labor practices and called for the company to negotiate in good faith. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg had urged workers to accept the agreement, warning that a strike would undermine efforts to stabilize the company. The strike's financial impact could be significant, with estimates suggesting a potential $1.5 billion hit over 30 days.
