California firefighters continue battling Corral fire east of San Francisco
SUMMARY
California firefighters made significant progress Sunday in controlling a wildfire near Tracy, 60 miles east of San Francisco. The wind-driven Corral Fire, which erupted Saturday in grassy hills managed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, scorched 22 square miles and destroyed a home. As of Sunday evening, it was 50% contained. The research center was not immediately threatened. Thousands, including Tracy residents, were evacuated but could return home Sunday evening. The fire, fueled by strong winds, forced the closure of major highways, which have since reopened.
