Comer subpoenas Mayorkas for information on Walz, China
SUMMARY
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) subpoenaed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, seeking information about Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s alleged connection to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The subpoena, issued a day before the vice-presidential debate between Walz and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), stems from whistleblower reports and concerns within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Comer requested documents, including communications from a Microsoft Teams chat titled “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync” related to nation-state threats. The investigation scrutinizes Walz's frequent trips to China, which have raised Republican concerns since his nomination as Kamala Harris's running mate. Comer emphasized that the probe began long before Walz’s candidacy, aiming to assess CCP influence on prominent American figures. This follows other Republican efforts targeting Walz, including a separate subpoena over COVID-19 funds and inquiries into his foreign travel.
