French elections: Riots erupt after left-wing coalition projected to win plurality of seats
SUMMARY
Radical left-wing rioters in Paris reacted violently to the far-left coalition's electoral victory. Tens of thousands gathered in Place de la République, celebrating and causing chaos. The protests quickly escalated into riots, with bonfires, Molotov cocktails, vandalized businesses and smoke bombs. Police in riot gear were called in, using tear gas and made arrests to control the situation. The rioters' actions were driven by support for the Popular Front, a radical leftist coalition including the Socialist Party, French Communist Party, Ecologists, and France Unbowed, which aims to reverse Macron's pension reforms and implement other progressive measures. French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced his intent to resign after the far-left coalition won a plurality of parliamentary seats in snap elections.
