Gunman who shot 2 NYPD cops revealed to be migrant who recently crossed into US via Eagle Pass: sources

Two NYPD officers, Christopher Abreu and Richard Yarusso, were shot early Monday while attempting to stop 19-year-old Venezuelan illegal Bernardo Castro Mata, riding a scooter in Elmhurst, Queens. Castro Mata, who entered the U.S. via Eagle Pass, Texas, last July, fired at the officers during a foot chase, hitting Abreu in the leg and Yarusso in his bulletproof vest. Despite his injuries, Yarusso applied a tourniquet to Abreu's leg. The suspect was apprehended and taken for surgery. Both officers were treated and released from the hospital, receiving commendations for their bravery. Castro Mata, linked to several robberies, has no prior criminal record in New York.
