Japan and US upgrade military ties citing threat from China as ‘greatest strategic challenge’
SUMMARY
In Tokyo, Japanese and US defense officials pledged to enhance military cooperation in response to China's growing influence. At the "2+2" security talks, they agreed to upgrade US Forces Japan (USFJ) command capabilities and expand American-licensed missile production in Japan. The new arrangement will give USFJ greater operational authority while still reporting to US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM). The discussions highlighted concerns over China's assertive policies in the East and South China Seas and North Korea's nuclear ambitions. The joint statement labeled China's foreign policy as a major strategic challenge. Additionally, Japan and the US will advance arms industry cooperation, including missile co-production and military equipment maintenance, reflecting Japan's increasing military engagement.
