Japanese government encouraging 4-day workweek due to labor shortage
SUMMARY
The Japanese government is pushing for a four-day workweek to address a looming labor shortage, potentially reaching a deficit of 1 million workers by 2040. As part of its “work style reform” campaign, known as “hatarakikata kaikaku,” Japan is promoting flexible work options, shorter hours, overtime limits, and paid leave. Despite these efforts, only 8% of companies offer their employees three or more days off per week, and only 7% adhere to the legally mandated one-day off. Few businesses have sought government grants or consulting for this initiative, with only three companies participating so far. Panasonic Holdings Corp., which allows a four-day workweek for 63,000 employees, reported that only 150 employees opted in. The campaign aims to create a more adaptable work environment and improve workers' future outlooks.
