Los Angeles bus hijacking: Suspect shoots passenger before taking vehicle on one-hour joy ride: 'It was just like Speed'

A terrifying hijacking unfolded in Los Angeles overnight as a gunman commandeered an MTA bus and led police on a high-speed, one-hour chase through the city. The suspect, who has not been identified, shot a 48-year-old male passenger at around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday before taking control of the bus. As the chase progressed, the suspect drove recklessly, at one point going the wrong way on a one-way street. Police deployed spike strips to stop the bus, eventually forcing it to halt. A tense standoff ensued, with the suspect reportedly holding at least one person hostage inside the vehicle. SWAT officers apprehended the suspect shortly after 2 a.m. The gunshot victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition, having been shot twice. Police believe the suspect may be connected to an earlier shooting, though a motive has not yet been released.
