Man shot and killed grizzly bear after it attacked him in Montana
SUMMARY
A 72-year-old man was forced to shoot and kill a grizzly bear after it attacked him while he was picking huckleberries in Flathead National Forest, Montana. The bear, an adult female, likely attacked in defense of her cubs. The man sustained significant injuries and was hospitalized. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials have set up game cameras to check for cubs and will consider their fate based on available facilities. In a separate incident, a grizzly bear near Gardiner was shot after becoming a nuisance by scavenging for food around homes. Grizzly bears in the contiguous U.S. are listed as threatened, though there are efforts to remove this status to allow hunting.
