North Korean Soldiers Suffer 'Multiple Casualties' From Land Mines in DMZ
SUMMARY
North Korean soldiers working inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) have been "injured or killed" by exploding mines, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. Despite multiple casualties from landmine explosions, the North continues to send troops into front-line areas of the DMZ, as reported by Yonhap news agency. The DMZ, a 2.5-mile wide buffer zone on either side of the Military Demarcation Line, has served as the de facto inter-Korean border since the 1953 Korean War armistice. It is one of the world's most militarized and heavily mined borders.
