North Korea’s Kim Jong Un reportedly ordered dozens of officials executed after deadly floods
SUMMARY
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly ordered the execution of 20 to 30 officials last month following severe flooding that caused extensive damage and loss of life. The floods, which struck the Chagang Province in July, destroyed over 4,000 homes and impacted public infrastructure in Sinuiju and Uiju. Kim blamed these officials for their failure to prevent the disaster, calling the casualties "unacceptable." Despite offers of aid from China, Russia, and South Korea, North Korea has rejected external assistance. Kim has also criticized South Korean reports of the flooding as exaggerations and provocations against his regime. The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Kim's call for "strict punishment" of those responsible.
