Republicans fume over report part of $2.8B Afghan humanitarian funding went to Taliban
SUMMARY
House Republicans criticized the Biden administration after reports suggested U.S. humanitarian aid to Afghanistan ended up with the Taliban. During a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing, Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) condemned the allocation of $2.8 billion in aid following the 2021 U.S. withdrawal, highlighting that millions might have reached the Taliban. In May, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) noted a federal inspector general’s finding that $10.9 million indirectly benefited the Taliban, demanding immediate corrective action. The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reported this amount is likely only a fraction of the total funds received by the Taliban.
