Son of 'El Chapo' and another Sinaloa Cartel leader arrested in Texas
SUMMARY
Joaquín Guzmán Lopez, son of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán Loera, and cartel co-founder Ismael Zambada Garcia were arrested in El Paso, Texas, facing multiple charges related to the Sinaloa Cartel's fentanyl trafficking networks, announced U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. Despite a 2023 publicized ban on fentanyl, the DEA reported continued high seizures at the border. The Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels are central to the U.S. synthetic drug crisis, particularly fentanyl, which caused 74,702 of the 107,543 drug overdose deaths last year. This arrest follows the earlier apprehension of Ovidio Guzmán Lopez, also indicted on drug charges. Garland emphasized the Justice Department’s commitment to holding cartel leaders accountable for the deadly drug epidemic.
