Texas Gov. Abbott orders hospitals to collect and send state data on patients’ immigration status
SUMMARY
Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an executive order on Thursday mandating hospitals to collect and report data on patients’ immigration status. Starting November 1, hospitals must document information on patients who are not lawfully present in the U.S., including the number of inpatient discharges, emergency visits, and related healthcare costs. Abbott stressed that the influx of illegals at Texas's border with Mexico strains the state's healthcare system and increases costs for Texans. He blamed the Biden-Harris administration's border policies for the financial burden and stated that Texas should not bear the responsibility of funding healthcare for noncitizens. Abbott indicated that Texas would seek federal reimbursement for these expenses.
