Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sets special election to fill the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee's seat
SUMMARY
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has scheduled a special election for November 5th, 2024, to fill the seat of the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away in July. This special election will decide who will serve the remainder of Jackson Lee's term, which ends in January 2025. On the same day, a general election will be held to elect the representative for the next term, beginning in January 2025. Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and former City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards are among the candidates running to replace Jackson Lee in the state's 18th Congressional District. Edwards had previously challenged Jackson Lee in the primary earlier this year, losing by over 20 percentage points. Both candidates expressed their respect for Jackson Lee's legacy and commitment to continuing her work in their statements. Other potential candidates must declare their candidacy by August 22nd.
