Two ex-Penn students plead guilty in hazing case involving death of teen pledge
SUMMARY
Two former University of Pennsylvania students, Brendan Young and Daniel Casey, have pleaded guilty to misdemeanor hazing and reckless endangerment in connection with the 2017 death of Timothy Piazza. Piazza, a 19-year-old pledge, died after being served 18 drinks in 82 minutes during a bid-acceptance event at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He sustained fatal head and abdominal injuries from a fall and was found unconscious, with emergency help delayed by 40 minutes. Young and Casey, who were president and vice president of the chapter at the time, face one count of reckless endangerment and 14 counts of hazing each. Their sentencing is set for October 1st. The case, which highlighted the dangers of hazing and led to the Timothy J. Piazza Antihazing Law in Pennsylvania, initially involved 28 fraternity members.
