US Air Force’s new cutting-edge drone thinks, flies, acts on its own
SUMMARY
The U.S. Air Force has unveiled the XQ-67A, a groundbreaking unmanned aerial vehicle that promises to revolutionize aerial combat and reconnaissance. This innovative drone, which first took flight in California in February 2024, operates autonomously, making decisions based on its programming and collected data. Designed as part of the "off-board sensing station" program, the XQ-67A is meant to perform high-risk reconnaissance missions, gathering crucial information in dangerous scenarios. Built on a "common chassis," it allows for rapid and cost-effective development of various drone types. This drone family includes the XQ-58A Valkyrie and the forthcoming off-board weapon station, forming a core part of the Air Force's "Loyal Wingman" concept, where autonomous drones support human pilots. With capabilities such as extended mission durations and the ability to operate in hazardous environments, the XQ-67A enhances the Air Force's intelligence, surveillance, and combat operations.
