New Orleans truck attack suspect identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar as ISIS flag and weapons recovered
SUMMARY
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, has been identified as the suspect in the New Orleans truck attack, which killed 10 people and injured at least 35 during New Year celebrations. Jabbar, an Army veteran, drove a rented pickup truck through barricades at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets in the French Quarter, a tourist hotspot, at around 3:15 a.m. The FBI, treating the incident as terrorism, found an ISIS flag, firearms, and a potential improvised explosive device (IED) in the vehicle. Jabbar died in a shoot-out with police after crashing the truck; two officers were injured but are recovering. Additional IEDs were located in the area, and police are investigating accomplices after video footage showed four individuals placing an explosive device. New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the attacker as intent on mass carnage, while Mayor LaToya Cantrell noted ongoing efforts to improve street safety infrastructure.
