Trump orders release of long-secret final files on JFK, RFK, MLK assassinations
SUMMARY
President Trump signed an executive order Thursday requiring the declassification and release of files on the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., calling the move “long overdue.” The Justice Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence must prepare plans for releasing JFK-related records within 15 days and RFK and MLK files within 45 days. The files are expected to address key questions, including Lee Harvey Oswald’s contact with Soviet and Cuban embassies before JFK’s murder, Jack Ruby’s ties to organized crime, and the FBI’s controversial surveillance and discrediting of King. The records may also shed light on Sirhan Sirhan’s conviction for RFK’s assassination, which some argue was a setup. Trump’s decision coincides with his nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. RFK Jr. has publicly accused the CIA of involvement in both Kennedy assassinations.
