DOJ sues Virginia over Youngkin’s purge of noncitizens from voter rolls
SUMMARY
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is suing Virginia over Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s decision to remove noncitizens from voter rolls less than 90 days before the Nov. 5 election. The DOJ argues that this purge violates the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, which prohibits significant changes to voter rolls close to an election. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke stated that this move puts legitimate voters at risk of being wrongfully removed. Youngkin defended his actions, saying the voter purge was necessary to ensure legal votes are counted, accusing the Biden administration of attempting to undermine election integrity. He vowed to work with Attorney General Jason Miyares to defend Virginia’s voter list maintenance efforts.
