Hurricane Helene: FOX Weather meteorologist rescues woman from car during live shot as floodwaters rise
SUMMARY
FOX Weather meteorologist Bob Van Dillen became a hero during a live broadcast as he rescued a woman trapped in her car amid rising floodwaters caused by Hurricane Helene near Atlanta on Friday. As the deadly storm wreaked havoc, Van Dillen saw the woman’s car nearly submerged and couldn’t wait for first responders. “I realized I’m with you guys on the air, but I can’t let it go,” Van Dillen explained during the live shot. “I took my wallet out of my pants, and I went in there, waded in, got chest deep.” The woman was still strapped in her vehicle, with the water rising fast. “She was about neck-deep submerged in her own car,” Van Dillen said. “I told her, ‘OK, undo your seatbelt,’ and then I said, ‘Let me have your phone, let me have your bags,’ and put her on my back. She’s fine, but she was in shock.” Reflecting on the dramatic rescue, Van Dillen added, “She would have drowned.” The woman, in shock and shivering, was treated by Van Dillen and later picked up by her husband.
