Ilhan Omar wins primary
SUMMARY
Radical left-wing Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, solidifying her path to re-election in November. Omar defeated former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, who had posed a serious challenge in 2022, nearly defeating her by less than 2,500 votes. This time, Omar outspent and outraised Samuels, bringing in nearly $6.8 million compared to his $1.4 million. Unlike previous elections, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) did not invest heavily against her in this primary. Despite facing criticism over her stance on Israel, Omar received support from both establishment Democrats and progressives, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Bernie Sanders. Given the solidly blue nature of her district, she is favored to win re-election in November.
