JD Vance, Speaker Johnson Had ‘Productive Conversation’ over Funding, Debt Negotiations
SUMMARY
Vice President-elect JD Vance shared that he and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) had a "productive conversation" regarding the ongoing negotiations over a recently unveiled government funding bill. Vance told reporters that they were in the "middle of negotiations" on the continuing resolution (CR) and expressed optimism about resolving some of the issues at hand. Vance also indicated that President-elect Donald Trump supports a "clean" CR, so long as it includes a debt ceiling increase, stating, “What the president believes is we should support a clean CR so long as it contains a debt ceiling increase.” Earlier, Vance and Trump issued a joint statement criticizing the CR as a "spending bill" that includes favorable provisions for government censors and for Liz Cheney, signaling their opposition to parts of the bill.
