Migrants Protest for More Free Government Benefits in New York City
SUMMARY
Several dozen migrants and liberal Democrat politicians protested in New York City on Thursday, demanding increased government benefits. The New York Immigration Coalition, alongside elected officials, called for more city budget allocations: $109 million for free legal services, $5 million for language services, $25 million for migrant support programs, and an end to shelter evictions. Council Members Alexa Avilés and Shahana Hanif emphasized the need for better education, jobs, healthcare, and housing for migrants. Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, highlighted the long-term benefits of investing in immigrants. Despite New York City spending $1.45 billion on migrant issues last year, it is projected to spend $12 billion over the next three years.
