Nevada gov backs women's volleyball players refusing to compete against team with trans player
SUMMARY
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has voiced his support for players from the Nevada Wolf Pack women’s volleyball team who have refused to compete against San Jose State due to the presence of a transgender woman, Blaire Fleming, on the opposing team. Lombardo stated; "No student athlete should ever be pressured to play a game where they don’t feel safe — period." He also criticized the NCAA, adding, "It’s irresponsible for the NCAA to put student athletes in a position of balancing their personal safety against the schools, competition, and sports they love." The refusal to compete comes as several other schools, including Southern Utah, Boise State, Wyoming, and Utah State, have also forfeited matches against San Jose State, citing safety concerns. The players from Nevada expressed their desire to stand in solidarity with these schools and protested what they saw as an "injustice" against female athletes.
