Republicans on brink of clinching US House control after taking Senate
SUMMARY
Republicans are on the brink of securing control of the U.S. House of Representatives, a crucial element for President-elect Donald Trump’s ability to push his policy agenda once he takes office in January. With votes still being counted from the November 5 elections, Republicans had already secured 216 out of the 435 House seats, and were projected to maintain control of key districts. They need just five more seats to ensure a majority, while Democrats have secured 205 seats so far. In addition to control of the House, Republicans have gained enough victories to take control of the Senate. This gives Trump and the GOP significant power to enact tax cuts, energy deregulation, and enhanced border security measures. The remaining House races are mostly in competitive districts in Western states, where vote counting is slower. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are set to decide their leader for 2025, with Senators John Thune, John Cornyn, and Rick Scott vying for the position.
