Scientists design spacesuit that can turn urine into drinking water
SUMMARY
A new spacesuit prototype, inspired by Dune's stillsuits, recycles urine into drinking water for astronauts on lunar expeditions. Designed by Sofia Etlin from Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell University, the suit features a vacuum-based external catheter and osmosis unit to purify urine within five minutes, ensuring a continuous water supply. It aims to support NASA's Artemis missions, addressing current limitations of water availability and discomfort with existing waste management systems. Compact and lightweight, the system undergoes testing in simulated microgravity to ensure functionality and safety. Details are published in Frontiers in Space Technology, with plans for human trials in New York.
