WHO acknowledges bird flu patient in Mexico died of other medical conditions
SUMMARY
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that Mexican authorities have determined a 59-year-old patient who tested positive for the H5N2 strain of bird flu did not die from the virus itself but from other underlying health conditions. This case marked the first laboratory-confirmed human infection with H5N2 globally and in Mexico. Despite testing positive for the virus, the patient's death was attributed to complications from pre-existing health issues, according to a multidisciplinary team of experts. Genetic analysis revealed a close similarity between the virus strain in the patient and that affecting birds in Mexico's Texcoco State. No human-to-human transmission has been identified, and contacts of the patient have tested negative for influenza viruses.
