Alleged FSU shooter ID’d as 20-year-old student, son of sheriff’s deputy with access to her firearm

SUMMARY
Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old Florida State University student, was identified as the suspect in the deadly shooting at the Tallahassee campus, killing two non-students and injuring five near the Student Union at 12:01 p.m. ET on April 17th. Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil confirmed Ikner, son of 18-year deputy Jessica Ikner, used his mother’s former service pistol, with a shotgun also found on him—though its use is unclear. Witnesses reported Ikner firing a rifle-like weapon before switching to a pistol. “This event is tragic in more ways than you people in the audience could ever fathom,” McNeil said at a 4:33 p.m. presser. Ikner, a Youth Advisory Council member, was shot by police, hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and taken into custody. FSU canceled classes through April 18, and the Student Union remained an active crime scene. Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare treated six victims, one critical.
