East Palestine train derailment spread 'hazardous' pollution to 16 states: Study
SUMMARY
A new study has revealed that the February 3rd, 2023, train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, caused extensive hazardous pollution across 16 states. The Norfolk Southern freight train, carrying hazardous materials, derailed and led to the release of toxic chemicals into the environment. The pollution spread over 540,000 square miles, impacting 110 million residents, or one-third of the U.S. population. Researchers found elevated levels of contaminants in air, soil, and water across the Midwest, Northeast, and Southern U.S. The study noted severe health impacts among East Palestine residents, with many experiencing prolonged symptoms. Norfolk Southern has since agreed to a $600 million settlement related to the incident.
