Tanker with 1,500 tonnes of oil sinks off Philippines
SUMMARY
A tanker carrying nearly 1.5 million liters of industrial fuel has capsized and sunk off Manila, Philippines, triggering an oil spill. Sixteen crew members of the Philippine-flagged MT Terra Nova were rescued, while one remains missing. The incident occurred as Typhoon Gaemi, which has caused severe flooding in Metro Manila, intensified seasonal monsoon rains. The oil spill is stretching for several kilometers, with strong winds and high waves complicating the response efforts. Manila Bay, where the tanker sank, is a major shipping route and area of economic activity. The spill follows a similar disaster in March 2023, which affected coastal villages and caused health issues among residents and cleanup workers.
