11 people dead and dozens missing after two shipwrecks off coast of Italy

At least 11 fatalities and numerous missing persons are reported following two shipwrecks off southern Italy. A German aid group's rescue ship retrieved 51 individuals, believed to be illegal migrants, from a sinking wooden vessel in the initial incident. Ten bodies were discovered trapped on the flooded lower deck near Lampedusa. Victims hailed from Syria, Egypt, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, according to the Organisation for Migration and UNICEF. The second shipwreck, east of Calabria, involved a yacht that caught fire after departing Turkey, resulting in one confirmed death and 12 illegal migrants rescued. Over 50 individuals remain unaccounted for from the vessel near Calabria.
