Buttigieg Is Pushing Out Billions In Grants Before Trump Takes Over
SUMMARY
Outgoing Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is expediting the allocation of funds from President Biden’s $1.2 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which has already distributed $570 billion to over 66,000 projects nationwide. Key investments include $3.4 billion for Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, grants for cleaner materials in construction, and high-speed rail projects like California’s bullet train and Brightline West between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. With Trump’s inauguration approaching, Buttigieg aims to finalize funding for projects potentially deprioritized by the new administration, such as climate-focused initiatives and rail expansions. The law has green-lit tens of thousands of projects, including roads, bridges, and ports, with 14,000 already completed. Sean Duffy, a former congressman and Trump’s nominee for transportation secretary, is expected to shift priorities towards less wasteful initiatives.
