Democrat Elissa Slotkin wins Michigan Senate race
SUMMARY
Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D) has been projected to win Michigan’s Senate race, a significant retention for Democrats in one of the nation’s most hotly contested seats. Slotkin, a three-term congresswoman and former CIA analyst, narrowly defeated Republican Mike Rogers, who previously served as a Michigan congressman and entered the race with substantial GOP support. Slotkin will take the place of Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D), who held the seat for over two decades and personally endorsed Slotkin, lending weight to her campaign. The Michigan Senate race was one of just four "toss-up" contests according to the Cook Political Report, with Decision Desk HQ showing Slotkin leading by a slim margin in polling averages leading up to Election Day. Michigan was also a key battleground in the presidential election; although President-elect Donald Trump carried the state, a Michigan Republican hasn’t won a Senate seat in 30 years.
