Miller-Meeks holds GOP House seat in Iowa
SUMMARY
Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) has secured her seat in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, defeating Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan in a closely watched rematch. Miller-Meeks initially won this seat by a razor-thin margin of just six votes in 2020, one of the narrowest victories in U.S. House history. In the 2022 midterms, Miller-Meeks expanded her lead, beating Bohannan by around 7 points. This election, however, was more uncertain, as the Cook Political Report recently shifted the race to “toss-up” status due to factors including an Iowa abortion ban, which Democrats hoped would drive turnout against the incumbent. Miller-Meeks’s victory provides the GOP a key retention as they aim to hold their House majority. Her win comes despite an unexpected Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll showing Vice President Kamala Harris with a 3-point lead over Donald Trump in Iowa.
