Nearly two-thirds of Democrats want Biden to withdraw, new AP-NORC poll finds
SUMMARY
A new AP-NORC poll shows nearly two-thirds of Democrats believe President Joe Biden should withdraw from the presidential race and allow a different candidate to run. Conducted from July 11-15, 2024, the poll surveyed 1,253 adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points. Only about 30% of Democrats are confident in Biden’s mental capability to serve effectively, a drop from 40% in February. The findings highlight the challenges Biden, 81, faces within his own party. Vice President Kamala Harris’s favorability rating is similar to Biden’s, though slightly fewer Americans view her unfavorably. Despite Biden's struggles, Black Democrats remain some of his strongest supporters. Overall, 70% of Americans think Biden should step aside, with Democrats only slightly less likely than Republicans and independents to want a new nominee.
