Nick Begich defeats Mary Peltola for Alaska's lone House seat
SUMMARY
Republican Nick Begich won the Alaska House race against incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola (D-AK) after a narrow contest and two weeks of vote counting. Begich secured 48.4% of the vote, while Peltola received 46.4%. Independent John Wayne Howe and Democrat Eric Hafner garnered 3.9% and 1%, respectively. This victory, aided by Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system, strengthens the GOP’s slim House majority. Begich, who previously ran unsuccessfully for the seat, benefitted from ranked-choice voting, which split votes in previous elections and helped Peltola win in 2022. Peltola conceded, stating it was an honor to serve Alaska and urging Begich to represent all Alaskans. Begich’s victory marks a return to Republican representation in Alaska’s congressional seat after Peltola's two-year term. The congressman-elect promised to fight for Alaska’s jobs, economy, and unique way of life.
