Number of Arizona voters affected by citizenship database glitch nearly doubles
SUMMARY
Arizona election officials revealed that an additional 120,000 voters were erroneously registered without providing proof of citizenship, bringing the total number affected by the database glitch to 218,000. Secretary of State Adrian Fontes (D) attributed the error to the state's Motor Vehicles Division (MVD), which mistakenly registered individuals without the required documentation, violating Arizona’s Proposition 200. This marks the second incident this month, after 100,000 voters were similarly impacted. Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer previously filed a lawsuit seeking to bar these individuals from state elections, but the Arizona Supreme Court sided with Fontes, allowing them to vote in both state and federal contests. Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer emphasized that the error should not disenfranchise voters. Richer, while acknowledging the voters' sworn attestations of citizenship, insists that proper proof should still be required.
