Preconstruction work to begin in January to rebuild collapsed Baltimore bridge
SUMMARY
Preconstruction work for the new Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore will begin in January 2025, following the bridge's collapse on March 26 when a container ship crashed into a supporting column, killing six roadworkers. Planned activities include topographic and underwater surveys and soil sampling, according to Maryland Transportation Authority spokesperson Bradley Tanner. Demolition of the collapsed bridge is set for spring 2025, with the new bridge expected to be completed by October 2028. The project, estimated at $2 billion, is led by Kiewit Corporation, based in Omaha, Nebraska. A Coast Guard notice alerts mariners to construction in the Patapsco River starting January 7. Maryland Transportation Authority Chief Engineer Jim Harkness highlighted the extensive rebuilding effort, expected to span nearly four years.
