X sues major brands, ad industry group for antitrust
SUMMARY
X, formerly known as Twitter, has filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) and several of its members, including CVS Health, Mars, Orsted, and Unilever. The lawsuit accuses GARM of orchestrating an illegal advertising boycott against X after Elon Musk acquired the platform in 2022, alleging that the group unfairly pressured advertisers to withhold billions in revenue. X CEO Linda Yaccarino condemned GARM's actions, stating, "This case is about more than damages—we have to fix a broken ecosystem that allows this illegal activity to occur." The lawsuit is part of a broader effort to challenge GARM, for their unfair practices within the digital advertising space. X claims the boycott has significantly hurt its ad revenue, dropping from $4.5 billion in 2021 to a projected $2 billion this year. The lawsuit’s outcome could influence future industry practices.
